Taxonomy

The holotype of Theila hirsuta Semper, 1886-1902 [1902]: 657, pl. 66, fig., 6 is from the Philippines.

Description

A very large, pale grey-brown, fulvous and grey-white sp. with typical Eoophyla paterning. The fulvous brown is mostly on the margins of the FW with the angled median band and post median band enclosing a large triangle of grey scales. There is a whitish sub termenal band. The slightly falcate HW is largely fulvous and grey-white with fulvous bands at the base, postmedially and marginally separated by two white bands edged by narrow black lines. The tornal area has three small eye-spots, some part ringed in white. The legs are rather long and delicate. Another similar specimen in MfNH Berlin #332105 labelled Java may be the holotype; a darker specimen there is from Sumatra and a another specimen, from Sabah.

E. adjunctalis is superficially similar in apearance but much smaller.
