Canaea tessellatula Pagenstecher
- Family: Thyrididae
- Subfamily: Striglininae
- Genus: Canaea
- Distribution: Philippines?
- Wing Length: 35-<40mm
Taxonomy
Philippines, Belabac, Dalawan Bay. The holotype of Rhodoneura tessellatula Pagenstecher 1892:58 from the Philippines (Cebu Is.) is lost (Whalley, 1971b:165). Warren (1898:223) considered this species a junior subjective syn. of C. semitessellalis and Whalley (1971b:165) incorrectly cited its removal from syn. with semitessellata (rather than from C. semitessellalis). He gave the grounds that C. semitessellata Walker and the Genus Canaea were not known from the Philippines at that time.
- comb. rev. to Canaea.
- ms comb. n. removal from synonymy (Shaffer 1986 LepIndex).
Here it is treated as a good species.
Description
The male is pale yellow brown with patchy areas of paler fenestration on the outer parts of the wings. The female is larger and more orange brown with less paler areas.
Similar Species
Very similar to C.semitessellalis Walker, [1864] 1863 from Australia (Q), (not illustrated here) and the unnamed Canaea sp. 3 from Brunei.
