  • Distribution: A very widespread species. There are two named sspp: ssp. <i>buergersi</i> Gaede 1922, from Sulawesi, PNG, Australia and ssp. <i>oceanica</i> Inoue 1982 from Burma [Myanmar], China, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, W. Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra, Borneo (Sabah, Sarawak, Labuan), Philippines, Java, Bali. One or other ssp. is also present on Lombok, Moluccas, New Ireland, Solomon Is, Fiji.
  • Habitat: Lowland and lower montane forest; <1400m.
  • Wing Length: 18-27mm

Taxonomy

'Striglina oceanica' from Singapore is imaged. The holotype of Striglina buergersi Gaede, 1922:29, 31 is from New Guinea (Kaiserin Augusta River). See Whalley (1976:62, fig’d).

Description

A rich red-brown, small to medium sized species with the thyridid reticulation picked out in darker brown. There is a diagonal line crossing both wings which runs from the FW costa close to the apex to the inner margin and continues across the HW to the inner margin. The HW has an indistinct line curving across the HW postmedian area towards the tornus.

Similar Species

The very similar S. irresecta Whalley (1976) is slightly larger.
