Taxonomy

The holotype of Samea exigua Butler, 1879: 453 from Japan is in the BMNH.

  • syn. Cnaphalocrocis sanitalis Snellen, [1882] (1880-1892): 65. TL Sumatra. The male type is in Leiden.

It is the TS of Susumia Marumo 1930 (n.n.f. Marasmia Lederer, 1863a: 277). Comb. n. to Marasmia (Inoue, 1982). (Inoue 1982 1: 334, 2:232, 453).

As Cnaphalocrocis in LepIndex but Globiz still treats most Cnaphalocrocis as Marasmia despite Lewvanich (1990: 553) and Shaffer et al. (1996).

Description

This sp. is less yellow and a paler brown than many Cnaphalocrocis spp. The FW submarginal white area and the adjacent distal postmedian pale patch is fairly distinctive.The FW is slightly pointed.

Life History

The three spp, Cnaphalocrocis exigua, C. medinalis, and C. patnalis, have attained pest status on Oryza sativa (Rice); these are serious pests (Pathak et al., 1994).
