Taxonomy
The male lectotype of Entephria appensalis Snellen, 1884: 41, pl. 3, figs 12, 12a, det. by Munroe et al. (1958: 68) TL Java (Rembang), is in the RMNH Leiden.
- syn. Cotachena fimbrialis Gaede, 1917: TL New Guinea. The type is in the MfNH, Berlin. Infraspecific as a var.
See Conogethes aedilis Meyrick, 1887: 227. T.L. Australia (Queensland, Townsville). [ = Patania excurvalis Warren, 1896: 175]. Comb. n. to Patania Moore 1879-1888 [1888] (Shaffer et al., 1996). These are very similar and may also be syn.
- nec syn. Chalcidoptera appensata var. aethiops [Chalcidoptera aethiops Gaede, 1917: 393], TL Togo, (Bismarkburg) once treated as a var. of appensalis. A good sp. (Maes 1996: 271).
These brown and white spp. do not resemble most of the other Chalcidoptera spp. and may be better placed elsewhere such as Cotachena Moore, 1885. See Conogethes aedilis. There is also little sexual dimorphism unlike more typical Chalcidoptera spp.
As Chalcidoptera in Globiz. Generic placement in doubt.
Description
This is a mainly pale brown species with a distinctive white post median patch. The antemedian lines curve across both wings. The male abdomen is elongate and the pale brown becomes more fulvous towards the tip. It has pale intersegmental rings and a pair of black spots on the 4th and 5th segment. The presence of white spots varies slightly as in var. fimbrialis Gaede.
