Taxonomy

The holotype of Aediodes effertalis Walker, 1859: 348 is from Sri Lanka. comb. n. to Agrotera Meyrick, 1887: 224.

Description

A brightly coloured sp. superficially similar to A. basinotata Hampson. The basal area of the FW is cream speckled with orange and there is a similar but smaller area on the HW. Unlike A. basinotata Hampson there is no distinct submedian line delineating the deep purple distal parts of the wings. The FW has a looping post median line in darker purple-brown and the margin and fringe is chequered with purple on white. Distinctive of the sp. is the irregular pale reniform spot bordered by bright orange. This orange patch may vary considerably in size. Some similar specimens, Agrotera sp. 6, from Sabah and W. Malaysia have virtually no orange around the prominent cream orbicular mark and may not be conspecific. See A. basinotata
