Taxonomy

The female holotype of Glyphodes eurytusalis Walker, 1859c: 503 from Sarawak is in the UM Oxford. The type #1121 was collected by A. R. Wallace. comb. n. to Agrioglypta (Shaffer et al., 1966);

  • syn. Glyphodes opalalis Hampson, 1891: 135, pl. 155 fig 20. is from India (Nilgiri).
  • syn. Margaronia episcopalis Meyrick, 1938a: 80. TL Java syn. n. (Shaffer et al., 1966).

Sutrisno (2005a) showed that Talanga Moore, 1885: 300. TS Oligostigma sexpunctalis Moore, 1877: 221 is a monophyletic genus with Agrioglypta eurytusalis located as the basal sp. and then followed by A. excelsalis.

Despite the above information we are retaining the above two sp. in Agrioglypta as they clearly do not resemble the majority of Talanga spp. It is possible that the Agrioglypta -Talanga group should be re-assigned to a different common genus.

Description

A magnificent species with brown and ochreous markings on a silvery white back ground and irridescent purplish areas which are easily lost. The HW is extremely large and ‘square’. There is little difference between the sexes. The male has short black scales on the valves and eversible long black hair pencils. The female has a brown tip to the abdomen.
